The James Blake House, Dorchester, MA.

The restoration of nineteen stained glass windows for Boston’s oldest home. All the windows were documented with photographs and rubbings showing existing conditions and glass from a previous restoration was removed and replaced with glass that more closely matched the original windows. All the windows were releaded with new restoration grade lead came.

Shalan Stained Glass was hired to undertake leaded glass repairs for the restoration of Boston’s Oldest House, the 1661 Elder James Blake House in Dorchester. This was for a National Register of Historic Places property also considered a Boston City Landmark, that was fully restored to its ca. 1895 appearance between 2004 and 2007. The job entailed leaded glass panel reconstruction for 19 panels involving nearly 1000 pieces of glass and replacement of lead came. All of us on the Dorchester Historical Society team were supremely impressed by Glenn Shalan’s professionalism and expertise in all aspects of the project. The work was done to exacting standards, in a tight time frame and has succeeded in helping to revitalize an important part of Dorchester near Edward Everett Square—and the project won three preservation awards.
