All the windows were documented with photographs and rubbings showing existing conditions and glass from a previous restoration was removed and replaced with glass that more closely matched the original windows. All the windows were releaded with new restoration grade lead came.

Shalan Stained Glass was hired to undertake leaded glass repairs for the restoration of Boston’s Oldest House, the 1661 Elder James Blake House in Dorchester. This was for a National Register of Historic Places property also considered a Boston City Landmark, that was fully restored to its ca. 1895 appearance between 2004 and 2007. The job entailed leaded glass panel reconstruction for 19 panels involving nearly 1000 pieces of glass and replacement of lead came. All of us on the Dorchester Historical Society team were supremely impressed by Glenn Shalan’s professionalism and expertise in all aspects of the project. The work was done to exacting standards, in a tight time frame and has succeeded in helping to revitalize an important part of Dorchester near Edward Everett Square—and the project won three preservation awards.

Originally designed in the 1870′s, the Rose Window at the United Methodist Church was restored in 2007. The unventilated protective glazing that was installed over the window contributed to the deterioration of the stained glass and the wood frame. The stained glass was removed, releaded, reinstalled and extensive wood repairs were performed to the frame. In 2008, the studio began restoring the sanctuary windows.

“The restoration of our stained glass windows has been magical. Thanks to Shalan Stained Glass, they are once again beautiful works of art. When the sun shines through them, they provide the spirituality that was intended at their creation.”

The project consisted of the restoration of ten stained glass windows, six feet by fifteen feet each, for the Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Washington, DC. Originally designed in 1932 by Oliver Smith, the windows feature the life and teachings of Christ. All ten windows were fully restored, which included the removal and documentation of existing conditions, cleaning the glass, appropriate conservation measures and the releading of 150 sections of stained glass. The work was completed in three phases, spanning eighteen months, with the last windows reinstalled in March, 2009.

“Shalan Stained Glass restored our ten oversize painted and stained glass 1930′s era windows beautifully. They were true conservation professionals, courteous, on time and on budget. The documentation was thorough: the work was top-notch. I would absolutely recommend them to a church or fine art collection for their work.”

In 2007, Shalan Stained Glass was commissioned to restore “The Good Shepherd Window” for St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Hillsborough, North Carolina. The window was removed and transported to our studio where we documented existing conditions including the efforts of a previous poor restoration. New perimeter glass was added to the bottom section of the window so as to resize it to its original opening. The window was then releaded and reinstalled with its original setting detail. The project was completed in March 2008.

” We asked Glenn and his firm to make a thorough restoration of the oldest stained glass window in our church. He performed the work beautifully and on schedule, taking care to conserve and to document the existing glass and to make judicious repairs and restoration to worn and deteriorated areas. Moreover, he was able to correct for a badly executed prior installation. We couldn’t be more pleased.”

Measuring three feet wide by sixteen feet high, this Victorian English Gothic window is the largest stained glass window in the church. Over the course of time, the window had become severely bowed and buckled due to flaws in the original design. Shalan Stained Glass removed, restored and reinstalled the window adding structural T-bars so as to adequately support the weight of each section of glass. The project was completed in June 2010.

” Shalan Stained Glass did a beautiful job of conserving our Victorian English Gothic window. The job was completed on time –even ahead of schedule–and we received detailed documentation of the project as it went along. The entire congregation was pleased with the results.”
